Blizzard of 2009-Newport, RI

Well this is the view from our room here in Newport. We are waiting....and waiting...they say we were to get the blizzard anytime...waiting.This is the pond frozen over, then Lester and I up on the roof looking for snowflakes. So off the supper we went. Then about 8:30 pm it started. It went from I think that's a flake, to Hey look out here. you can't see the lights to the bridge. It was a white out. Well It's now 10:30 Sun. morning and it's still coming down. We can hardley see the other side of the pond. They said on the new's that we have gotten over 20 inchs and it's still falling pretty good. I hope it stops by this afternoon. We are going to leave and head back to Charleston, SC in the morning. We might go out and play in it later. Have a happy white Christmas!!!

Newport Mansions

These are a couple of the well known "Newport mansions". I finally got the chance to go see three of these this week. One of the other wives (as I call us), came up this week also. So we went to see the cottages as The Vanderbilt's and others used to call their mansions. We what do I have to say? WOW!!! They are amazing. We first went to The Elms, then The Breakers, then on to The Marble House. The Breaker's was owned by the same Vanderbilt which owned The Baltimore house in NC. Then one of his brothers (I think) owned the Marble House.
We had a good time. Saw some unbelievable things. I think the Breakers was my favorite. I'd go see it again just to see the unbelievable art work! It was everywhere and beautiful. From the tile work, woodwork, door handles...to the frames works of art. There are paintings on the ceilings which came from 1700 chateu's of France.
We had a good time gawking at everything. Oh-ya ...the flowers! Oh the smell. It was fantastic. 22 degrees outside to some of the most beautiful flower arrangements I have every seen. Roses, Lilies, Gardenia's.... the smell was unreal.(Yes, I am still sneezing). We were told there we enough flowers delivered to the Breaker's everyday to there own room to be arranged for up to 38 arrangements daily! The one on the table was 3'x2'.
Yes they had the houses decorated for the Holiday's. It's the only things we could take pictures of inside. I hope you enjoy the tree's as much as we did. Have a wonderful Christmas!

Back in Newport, RI

Well I'm back in Newport, RI. It was such an ugly day out when I got here rain... yuck...New Engalnd in Dec. with rain need I say more?
But everyone has been great. I got to the hotel and every one was so nice. One of the ladies came and gave me a super big hug. They are great! THen they made arangments for us to come to another hotel the owner has. It's over on the beach. It's wonderful. I went out walking on the beach yesterday...sunny, windy, 37 degrees...but I had a great walk. I did have my cup of cocoa when I came in.
One of the other wives is up here too. (Patsy). I love to spend time with her. She always makes you laugh.
I'll post some of the pictures I took yesterday later. Todays high is to be 25, and windy. But it's so sunny and bright.
Everyone keep warm, watch the snow (if you have it).

What's happening...

Sunset in St. Augustine, FL.

Well what have we been doing? We've had our 25th anniversary! Yes 25 years together!(and our aniversary trip to St. Augustine, FL. Where we went on out honeymoon.) What a blessing it has been. Yes there has been the ups and downs, laughing and crying as in everything. But the promise Lester and I made then is still stong and growing in our hearts today. I thank the Lord for him daily. He is my husband, friend, father of my childeren, papa to the grandchilderen...need I say more. He can make me laugh or cry with just a look or shrug. Usualyy a laugh! He spoiles me rotten. Let's me do all my crazy things, that others just look in wonder at most of the time. (I'm not sure if that wonder is that I'm crazy, goofy, stupid or what). But he just goes along with it for me.
I pray you all get as much from your love as the Lord has given us. Bless you. Lester, I love you!

What is living history?

I heard this expression the other day. I've been thinking on it sense. If it means to bring parts and pieces of history to today so the people of today can see it and understand it better, then I'd love to be part of it.

I ride all over the countryside with Lester looking at(well you could say studing it). I have him ride where ever I can. I love to do it. He'll ask where? So I tell him, "Anywhere, just go".

I love to look at the arcutecture of the buildings (homes, barns, storefronts) then everything that goes with them. From the window frames, to the doors, to the fences. I know I drive him crazy with it. I'm alway's "did you see that! or That was fantastic!". But he does take me everywhere.

This last weekend we went back to the Sakonnet Winery in Tauton,RI. There's a fantastic little old town section( or crossroad). THe buildings date back to the 1700's. So I bet you can imagian what I like. Eye's everywhere. Then there is alos a yarn shop! Which makes it that much better.

While over there we went to this little resturant. It was really cute, and yes, I got our weekend picture as I like to call it.

I have on my lastest scarf. I love it! It's of alpaca & milk fiber. It's one of my favorite yarns. I'd love to make all kinds of things with it. It's so soft, hangs great.

We did get a couple bottles of wine (yumm). We were going to eat there on the grounds and have some of the wine...but, the resturant had just closed for the day. It had sounded so romantic. But the place we did go was real nice. I'd really like to go back and try the Lobster Bisque!

What don't you knit?

This is what I have been working on. Yes, keeping myself busy.
This is the alligator made for Josh. It was ok to work on. The pattern I had to rewrite a couple of times to get it even. It was alot thinner edging on one side. But I really like how it came out. The yarn worked really good. I have the kind and amount noted in ravelry.

The hats are made with Noro. I got the pattern off ravelry. (yes, I use that for just about everything). They were so easy to work. I made the size called for on the bigger one. But used a size 7 needles on the band. Then went up to a 9. The smaller one I did it all on a 7, and decreased the number of stitches from 80 to 72. I think it will be great on a smaller child.

The scarf I did from Noro also. It too is noted on ravlery. I came up with the pattern after changing about 4 others around to fit what I wanted. The yarn was a bit rough on the hands. But I love the colors and how it came out.

Now I'm on another scarf. This one for me! It's with ella rae -Latte. It is So soft and so far really nice to work with. I'm doing a seed stitch with 21 stitches, size 9 needles. I'm hoping that 2 skiens will be enough.

It's been raining out here. Yuck, overcast foggy wet...need I say more. But the sun has overcome and is out bright and shinning. I'm hoping it will stay nice out for the rest of the week.

Well I'll keep you all posted on how my last scarf is coming out, and what I'm to work on next.

What I did yesterday...

Well now you get to see what I worked on most of the day yesterday. I started working on the hat. I love it! Super yarn, great to work with, quick and easy pattern. I'm thinking of making a scarf to match it.
We then went over to go fishing.(about 5 min. from our room). Had some beautiful sun sceans, the weather was perfect. I then got to fish! Look what I got!!! Yes, me, a stripper fish about 24 inchs long. Yes, we thru it back. I don't often fish. I like to do it. I jsut usualy sit and watch, read, knit, take pictures. But I did have a good time.
I then started a new project when I got back to the room. It an aligator scarf! I think one of the grandchildern will really get a thrill out of it. It's going real easy. Alot of increases and decreases. I'll add pictures as it moves along. Have a great day.

One of our many ride thru RI...

While we were out riding about a week and a half ago we went by this. Yes to me WHAT A SITE! Those of you who know me know how I love anything to do with old houses and rock walls, and such. I love to go out to search for them. Well this is what we found.
It's the foundation of and old mill. On the outside over to the side is a creek. You can see that it had a small dam to lead it over to the mill. It came in down in the basement section. It still runs into it. You can see the exit hole for the water. The base for the wheel. It's fantastic. I wish I could find some more like this. Have a great afternoon. I'll be sending out my next one on some huge rocks we found, yes, rocks.

Wow what a week...

We have had quite a week. Finished one tropical storm to have another. One of our Senator's passing away. An earthquake in Charleston. Then we drove by Bunker Hill. So where do I start?
I had shown you the pictures I had of TS Bill. So I guess I'll start with TS Danny. I like to say, Oh Danny Boy, I so glad you were not a hurricane. If he was we would have really felt him. We started with the rain from what they said was a Northeasterner. (sorry I forgot to say we went thru that also). Then the rain from Danny started sometime Sat. It kept up until Sun. morning. To me it felt just like any other rainy day.

Lester and I went over to Conn. for the afternoon. Drove thru drizzle most of the way, no winds. Had a good time. That's when we went past Bunker's Hill. I'll do something on that another day. Then came home about 4o'clock. On the way home we started to feel the winds & more rain. But felt like a wind storm in Charleston.

The whole way there were flags at half mass for Senator Kennedy. I could imagine how terrible it is to do all of that on a nice day. But... wow what they must have been going thru. A couple of towns over they said got the most of the rain 6 in.

We then drove by a tower they have here in Newport. I love to look at it when ever we go by. But it just hit me different today. When I noticed the flag wasn't flying at it usual full, filled self up on the top. Then I remembered The senator. I just hadn't thought, well let me say it differently. You know they half mass the flags for them and you see it everywhere. But that, just really brought it home. That he wasn't just a Senator, but a husband, father, brother...then I thought of what all they had been thru. wow, I prya for the family for strength in there losses. Then Lester and I drove on to the beaches here in Middletown, The one's everyone goes to when they come here to Newport. They waves were something to see. I have never seen swells like that in my life! Bill didn't hold a candle to it. Lester and I went up on a look out to see what we could see...WOW!!! While up there we saw what they call Purgatory Chasm. It's a huge crack in the look out hill rocks. I guess you would say. About 10 ft. wide and about 4 stories deep. The wave were crashing into as I had never seen it do. It looked and sounded like something from a movie. Bri and I used to go up there alot when she was little and we lived about 2 blocks from it. But Lester had never seen it before. He was quite impressed.

We say the waves and alot of surfers. They were cool to watch. I don't know if I would ever try it. But it does look like it would be alot of fun to do.

Then here at the hotel later that afternoon I sat watching Fox news and what did I hear but that Charleston, SC had an earthquake that morning, about 12:30 am. It was a 3.6. Guess what my kids didn't even feel it! I sure felt the last one we had when I was home. It felt like something had ran into the side of my house. I praise God they are all safe.

Well until my next blog, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Let's see if it'll work....

I've tried to post something twice noe in the last couple of days. Something keeps happening and it all just shuts down. No reason just shuts down. So I'm trying again.

It's been a nasty day outside. We are to have Danny boy here in the morning. We had Mr. Bill last weekend. I think I've got some good pictures of the surf and stuff. I hope you enjoy them.

we had some really cool sunset's and stuff for two or three day's before he came. With some really strange for at 90 degrees out. WOW!

You can see one of the larger pictures of a small type cove where we were at at the mouth of the Newport's bay. It's about 45-50 ft across and about 3 stories high. So you can see hoe big the bolders and such are that we were standing on and how small they were to the waves.

I'll try another post in the morning. Have a blessed evening.
